Alsup Garden - Vicki, Bruce, and Levi Alsup
In the year 2011 is when daylilies entered the Alsup family’s lives. Bruce and Levi run their own landscaping company and they stopped by the Master Gardeners sale at the Cumming Fairgrounds to look for some Daylilies and other perennials they could use for a new design for a customer’s homes. While walking around they came upon the Daylily Society of Greater Atlanta’s booth and struck up a conversation with a few members about daylilies. They were invited to their next club meeting in Johns Creek, Cynthia Rigsby was pretty persistent, and they decided to check it out.
While at the meeting, Heather Herrington was the guest speaker and after seeing how beautiful some of her flowers were and what some of the flowers were auctioned off for, they decided to try daylilies. And that was the beginning of the obsession. They came home with a few more daylilies and put them in a small area of the yard. One daylily led to another daylily then another and another and you get the picture. The area that was started was soon out of space and more space was needed.
Well, we have almost four acres of property that we purchased from Vicki’s great aunt along with the house we live in now that they built in the 1970’s. The property has been in Vicki’s family for over 100 years and most of our neighbors are family. It was covered in lots of trees, wild privets, saw briars and they had to be removed to create space for a daylily garden area. One daylily bed, let to a daylily garden to another garden area and after Bruce and Levi started hybridizing, they needed seedling beds. After they got started hybridizing the rest of the family jumped in too, including the two grandchildren that started hybridizing at the age of four. You can say we are a little competitive, so we all try to outdo each other. We celebrate each other’s victories, but we do talk smack to each other about who is the best. This is where Alsup Gardens started and today we have over 700 varieties of daylilies in three large garden areas and three designated seedling beds.
The family consists of Bruce and Vicki Alsup, Levi and Bailey Alsup, Kelsey and Stephen Clack – Kinzley and Aubrey. Kelsey and Stephen built and moved into their home on part of the family property in October of 2022 and moved several of their daylilies to their house to start their own garden. Then Levi and Bailey built and moved next door to them in July 2023 taking several daylilies with them. He has a designated mini bed that he is concentrating on using for hybridizing minis.
This past show season all the Alsups had an entry in the DSGA June show, even the grandkids.
Bruce, Vicki, and Levi have all passed and are now Garden and Exhibition judges. Bruce judged his first show this year, Levi and Vicki will be judging in the 2024 show season. We look forward to seeing everyone at the shows and are especially excited to share our garden with everyone at the Region Garden Tours in June 2024.
