Serving Daylily Enthusiasts in the State of Georgia

Hemerocallis 'Dorothy And Toto'

Barbara Kirby

Greetings from the RP
Barbara Kirby

As we begin another decade, we are reminded of all those who have paved the way for us to be enjoying such a beautiful flower. The AHS has the infrastructure in place that now allows what used to be just a backyard hobby to become a source of income--how fortunate we are to have these opportunities/choices.
Better still; think of how many people you have gotten to know because of this flower. At the Winter Regional last month we had one of the biggest crowds ever at the Macon State College and these people came to see daylilies, buy daylilies, discover what new daylilies are on the horizon, and just plain talk daylilies to folks they hadn’t seen since previous meetings. Bottom line, we had fun and laughed so much—but missed those who couldn’t make it.
While the meeting is on the mind, must mention how much we enjoyed the Kinnebrew program and are grateful for their generosity of plants to the Regional---not to mention earlier donations to the National---check out that “to be named” seedling on the inside cover.. Both the bargain tables and auctions were tremendous successes and a special thank you to the Bonners and Bells for their generosity. Jan and Frances Joiner (yes, Frances was at the meeting) donated the “Joiner Bag” and it was filled with the entire 2010 Joiner collection. Add to that, some Bill Waldrop, Don & Nancy Eller introductions, the Templetons pipe plant, and Martha Fawcett’s gorgeous grapefruit that she tried to pass off as lemons on steroids, and you’ll understand why we did so well. However, what brought the biggest and loudest laughter was Michelle McMillan’s 20” X 36” enlarged framed poster-of none other than a frowning Earnest Yearwood-that sold for over $50!!! Can you imagine hanging that in your house... We extend our thanks not only to the donors and helpers, but to all of you who opened your hearts and pocketbooks.
Now, if you think that was fun, just imagine what it will be like at the National. We’ll be adding more people, judges workshops, seminars, boutiques, sales plants, auction and best of all—6 beautiful Georgia gardens at their peak—thousands of blooming daylilies, along with all sorts of statuary, water features, and perennials—a true gardeners dream. To help pull this off, we still need more volunteers. Please check out the list of opportunities to assist on page 34 and contact the committee chairs.
In the next few days we’ll reach over 400 registrations. We fully expect to meet our max of 600 (that’s all the Conference Center will hold), so go ahead and register NOW. Even if you help a few hours, you will still have lots of time to enjoy the National.
