Club News:
The Daylily Society of Greater Augusta found a sure cure for the winter blahs at its November 13th meeting. Bird watching! Janice and Ken Badke, owners of Wild Birds Unlimited, presented a program on providing food and shelter for our feathered friends to the twenty-two folks who gathered for our meeting. Janice detailed the necessary ingredients for a wildlife habitat, and told us what plants are attractive to birds and butterflies. Our speaker concluded by giving each of us sample seed packets and coupons from their store.

Helen Marie Kirby then introduced a point-system member-ship drive. The rewards are based on the number of guests and new members brought to our meetings by the current members. A quality daylily awaits the member who acquires the most points. We hope to grow numerically and horticulturally.

A spirited auction of recent introductions concluded the November meeting.

On a warm January 8th, an equally warm reception greeted two practically world-renown flower growers and arrangers. Jeanne Payne introduced Joe Watson and Earnest Yearwood of Milledgeville to the twenty-five attendees, who were eager to see what magic these men would create with flowers. The Augusta Society plans to include a design division in our annual daylily show, and we welcome any pointers. Well, strange as it may seem, the men had not one daylily bloom with which to work, but they delighted us with

beautiful, created on-the-spot arrangements using “substitute” daylilies of roses, carnations, sunflowers, delphinium, and camellias combined with eleagnus, aspidistra fatsia, and even a sasanqua branch. They gave us advice on developing a theme, and designing the perfect arrangement.

We left the meeting, eager to peruse our daylily catalogues, and try our hands at flower design.

On the windy day of Saturday, January 14, 2006,  eight of our club members made their way to the Region 5  Winter Meeting at the Macon State College in Macon,  Georgia.  Upon arrival, name tags were located, coffee and cookies were a welcome sight, and at 10:15 the first Region 5 meeting of the New Year began under the guidance of our new RVP, Floyd McNeal.
