PROPOSED CHANGEs TO THE Region 5 POPULARITY POLL
Recommended Ways To Change The Popularity Poll Ballot
Rationale: The current system allows for older winners to stay on the list indefinitely. As a result, it may discourage the addition of new cultivars to the Popularity Poll list.
After a daylily has won 1st place on the Region 5 Popularity Poll, the daylily will be removed from the
Popularity Poll ballot and placed in the Region 5 Honor Roll List. Placement on the Honor Roll will honor the Winning cultivar, while encouraging the future identification of additional exceptional cultivars that grow well in Region 5.
Honoring Pop Poll Winners
Rationale: A regional Honor Roll List gives a history to show the evolution of taste while honoring the former winners.
The regions should establish a list of Popularity Poll Winners as far back as possible. Winners as far back as1961 may be available. (This will be referenced as the Honor Roll List). Whenever possible the Honor Roll Name should begin with Daylily so that it will appear on search engines and provide more access to the public. Example: Daylily Honor Roll Region 5. The name of the list will be determined by each region.
The committee recommended that the former winners list be kept by region and displayed on the appropriate region’s website.
The AHS will continue to display the David Hall Memorial Award (Popularity Poll) Winners on its website. The history will be displayed with pictures for at least 10 years. Note: If passed, there are no current plans by AHS to include former Pop Poll winners in Section 9: Regional Popularity Poll Winner in accredited daylily shows.
The Timeline To Execute:
The 2017 ballot will remain the same.
The new guidelines (if approved) should be rolled out by the fall of 2017 to allow full implementation by the start of calendar 2018.
The Honor Roll List should be prepared and published by Region 5 as soon as possible after the region approves the change.
The removal of past winners from the Region 5 ballot (if approved) should take place with the 2018 Popularity Poll.
This recommendation will be presented at the Region 5 fall meeting to allow for public debate of the proposed change. Voting on this recommendation begins September 1 and concludes October 15. The ballot has the following two options listed and can be found in the Fall 2017 issue of The Georgia Daylily and on the Region 5 Facebook page. Ballots will also be available at the fall meeting and will be emailed out to all members with email addresses by Barbara Kirby.
(Do not change the current procedure for determining future candidates on the Popularity Poll).
